Canon R5ii showing overheat warning after 5 minutes and maybe 10 photos...

I have two Canon R5ii bodies. The newest one has started overheating in a way that feels completely unreasonable for a $4500 body. I first noticed it while doing my professional work as a motorsports photographer (motorcycle roadracing) a few weeks ago. Now, I understand that the conditions of motorsport work are ripe for overheating - hot sun, minimal shade, high frame rate. However, the other body doesn't do it.

The first time I noticed it being a problem was because I was in the middle of working on track. It started overheating in no more than ten minutes. I didn't know what to do so I stopped shooting, opened the battery and card doors, took everything out and hid it in the shade under my bag. It took quite a while for the warning to completely disappear.

Fast forward to just now - I took the camera outside on my porch for a test. It is sunny, breezy and only 66 degrees. The heat warning popped up after less than five minutes and MAYBE 10 frames. I was mostly just testing some autofocus settings so I wasn't even really taking the shots. Has anyone else experienced this? Solutions?

Honestly, I have been heavily considering selling my $40k gear for Sony. I am painfully disappointed in what Canon has been producing compared to some competitors.

@ObsidianPhoto sorry to hear that you are having challenges with the R5 Mk II. I know that you are probably pretty edgy right now but I have to ask, did you register the camera through the Canon portal. If it's still under warranty I am pretty confident that putting in a service request will get the ball rolling on Canon assiting with repair and resolution.

Also, it may be worth contacting CS @ the number: 800-652-2666

If the body isn't registered I would knock that out prior to making the call. My personal experience has been good with the Canon team so it may be the best place to start.

How long was the camera switched before you got a heat warning?  Simply leaving the camera powered up for extended periods may cause it to get warm.  The CPU and Image Sensor are two main sources of heat.

Is the  heat warning indicator is a 10-segment bar graph?  How many segments lit up?  A small indication of rising temperature is not a major problem.

Do you any accessories besides a lens attached to the camera?  If you’re capturing video, then you may want to consider the cooling fan battery get.

Unfortunately it is out of warranty though it was registered with Canon as soon as I purchased it. I am definitely edgy - I shoot racing which means I have a set amount of laps (anywhere from 9-17) to get the teams shots. Having to switch a lens to a different body and try to troubleshoot an overheating body negatively impacts professional work.

Today I had just gone outside and turned it on, so it wasn't powered up for more than a few minutes. It had 2/5 segments lit up and the top of the camera was warm. There are no other accessories attached and the memory card being used is a Lexar Gold Type B.

The fact that my other R5ii doesn't act this way, tells me that while it may not be a major problem (yet), it is a problem with, if nothing else, quality control. But also, I leave for another race weekend tomorrow in Alabama where it will be VERY hot, and now I have to worry about being one camera body down. If this thing reached to two bars after less than 5 minutes of just being outside in partial shade on a breezy 66 degree day and NOT shooting photos, it's going to heat up pretty quick in 90 degree heat on a race track while shooting in H+.

Agreed, it's a bad situation. You may still want to contact them, it can't hurt and they may come up with a solution.
