Canon EOS Rebel T5 Question

newcameraguy

I just bought a 2 year old EOS Rebel T5 from a family member (barely used).

I was learning some of the controls and I noticed that the AV/Trash button is not working. What do I need to do?

Some buttons function only in certain modes. What does the manual have to say on the subject? What were you trying to do that led you to believe that something may be wrong? The more "automatic" the settings you're using, the more likely it is that a given button will not function as you might have expected.

As Bob mentions... the mode dial has to be in one of the modes that use this button.

Put the camera in Manual mode (M) on the mode dial.

If you rotate the main dial on the front (this is the dial next to the shutter button) you should notice that it changes the shutter speed.

If you press-and-hold the Av button while turning the main dial on the front, you should notice that it changes the aperture setting (within the limits of what the possible aperture choices are for your lens).

If you put the camera in either Tv, Av, or Program (P) mode, the same button does not change aperture... instead it changes Exposure Compensation (you can tell the camera to either increase or decrease the actual exposure by some amount relative to what the camera's metered exposure would otherwise have used.  Again... press-and-hold this button while rotating the main dial to increase or decrease the exposure compensation.  (This setting does not automatically clear itself)

If you enable Exposure Compensation, don't forget to zero it out when you are finished or the next time you use your camera you'll wonder why your shots are consistently over or under-exposed.)

Thank you for the reply.

I was in Manual mode. And when I did try to delete a picture, I did go into display mode  first (the button beside menu) , I pressed the Trash Button (which is also the AV button) but no menu appeared. Next I went into menu, went to erase pictures and selected the ones I wanted to delete and I did press trash again but nothing happend.

Also when I go into the AV mode, and when i do press the AV button it doesn't change the value.

Your description makes me believe that you aren't using the button correctly.

Av stands for "Aperture value".  That's Canon's term for "f-stop" or "focal ratio".  The button wont make a menu appear.  It also does not change the Aperture value if the camera is in Aperture value mode (Av) on the mode dial.

1.  Rotate the mode dial to the "M" position (and only the M position ... do not attempt this in any other mode or it wont work)

2.  Press-and-hold the "Av" button while rotating the main dial on the front of the camera.  The "main dial" isn't the mode dial.   The "main dial" is the dial near the shutter button.

You'll find the button is located so that as you hold your camera to take a shot (even if you're looking through the viewfinder), you can press-and-hold this button with the thumb of your right hand while rotating the main-dial with your index finger.

When you do this, you should notice the "f-stop" (Av) is changing.

If you are not in M mode, then the button has a different behavior.  In either Program (P), Aperture value (Av), or Time value (Tv) modes, the button does NOT change the f-stop.  Instead it changes something called "Exposure Compensation" (that's the meaning of the +/- icon on the same button).  It causes the camera to increase or decrease the exposure.  If you find yourself in a sitaution where the camera seems to be shooting exposures a bit darker than you like (based on it's metering system), you can press-and-hold this button (you must be in P, Av, or Tv mode or this wont work) while rolling the main dial to increase (or decrease) the exposure.  e.g. if you increase it to +1 then this means it will meter the shot, but then it will add 1 full exposure stop (each 1 full stop means it will either double or halve the amount of light ... depending on if you are increasing or decreasing) then it would have done without the exposure compensation.

But this change is semi-permanent... once you dial in some exposure compensation, every shot you take from that point on will have the exposure compensation adjustment applied to it ... until you use the button to return the setting to 0 again (it will not reset itself.)

You may want to download and read through the manual ... and practice a bit.

The button has button more than one function.  In normal operation, it allows you to set the Av, aperture value, when your are in Craetive shooting modes on the mode dial.

If you press the Playback button, the arrowhead, then that button becomes the delete button.
