Canon EOS R5 Mark II crashing at high frame rates

I’m using a canon EOS R5 mark II and having crashing issues. The camera will be recording and simply freeze up and the screen will go black, the top screen by the mode switch is the only indication the camera is working and it will be the seconds of the video frozen. The solution is removing the battery and turning the camera back on. Doesn’t happen often but maybe 5% of the time. It hasn’t happened in a while but after I updated to 1.1.1 firmware it started happening again, it first happened when I got the camera and I narrowed it down to it being connect by usbc to a atamos shinobi II.

The setup I was using was the Canon R5 mark ii with a 24-70rf 2.8 or a 70-200rf 2.8. I used a atamos shinobi II through only HDMI and canons dummy battery to usbc then connected to a Smallrig V99 V mount battery. I connect the v mount through usbc. I shoot in 4kd 120fps with a high speed SanDisk extreme pro cf express type B. Not sure what to do as I’ve seen this problem happening with others online after updating to firmware 1.1.1.

One possibility is a ground loop between the AC adapter and the other gear.  Does this ever happen without the power arrangement you’re describing,  Using only battery power?

I haven’t tried without the AC adapter since the update. I will try and see what happens. Also ordered a third party dtap adapter to see if that fixes the issue.

I am having a hard time reconciling this statement with the later statement about using the AC adapter and battery pack. I also fail to understand why the extra battery pack.

What I was meaning to say is cutting power to the camera altogether fixes the crash. Removing the dummy battery or unplugging the usbc to the battery.

Im using the vmount battery to extend battery life for all day video shoots.

Greetings,

is the v-mount powering the Shinobi II and the camera?.

What brand / model v-mount are you using?

Do you know how many volts, amps and watts each interface can output simultaneously?

Have you tried different memory cards to see if the issue persists? Are these new cards or existing cards that you're using. If new where were they purchased from? Are you using an SD Card as well or just CF Express Type B Cards?

-Demetrius
Bodies: EOS 5D Mark IV
Lenses: EF Holy Trinity, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM
Speedlites: 420EX, 470EX-AI, 550EX & 600EX II-RT

For this case it was powering both, the camera through usbc and the vmount through 12v barrel connector. Not sure the max volts, amps, watts of the Smallrig VB99. Will have to de research. Haven’t had this issue until the update though, only at first after buying for about a week when using usbc to connect the shinobi ii.

I haven’t tried using different cards after this update as I only have two of the same CF Express type B cards. In the past when I had this issue when connecting to the shinobi ii via usbc, I could record on sd card also with same results as CF Express type B.

Hi b_rad_kauai,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having crashing issues with your EOS R5 Mark II.  If the new firmware update didn't help and none of the suggestions given work and the problems persist, I recommend chatting with Canon support to see what can be done to fix the issues.

😎

Cheers,
Joe
