Canon EOS M50 - Focus Issues

Bjorn11
Contributor

Hello! I'm pretty new to photography, and I recently got my first camera, an EOS M50. It has worked very well for the past few months, however, recently it has trouble with the autofocus. It only focuses on close subjects with the lens fully zoomed in, almost like its stuck in a "macro" mode. And has trouble focusing on people a few meters away. I have already double-checked the AF Modes, and re-applied the kit lens. Still, nothing works, I need advice on what to do. Thanks.

Welcome.

Is it possible that lens has a filter on it?

What is the model number?  Have you tried a different lens?

Hello, I have yet to purchase another lens, apart from the kit lens. And as far as I know, it does not have a filter on it.
The model no. of the lens is "783208014693". Thanks.

That looks more like a serial number.  Can you take a couple of photos of the writing on the lens with a phone and post them?

Bjorn11,

What AF Mode do you use? Whole Area? Single Point? Zone?

If you are using Whole Area, it's my understanding that your camera will focus on things closest to you, or things that have the greatest contrast.

Steve Thomas

Hello Steve, I currently use the Zone AF mode, however, I've tried using the other modes. Still nothing seems to be working.

Thanks for the photos of the lens.  It looks like there could be an extra something on the front of the lens.  This is what the lens should look like without the lens cap, as in your first photo.

Hello, I have checked the lens. And it does not seem to have any "filter" placed on it. Could it be a problem with the autofocus system?

That lens has a 'nested' design.Do you know if its extending and retracting properly?
