Canon EOS-1N RS bc error #6

I have a number 6 error (followed the service manual for the flashing BC error condition) Number 6 relates to the “sub-mirror doesn’t retract at release”

When pressing the shutter button all the way, nothing electromechanical happens, just goes into the error condition. Any ideas?

For a camera that's 30 years old. Anything is possible.  Failed part or component, failed main board etc 

Google suggests cleaning the lens and battery contacts.  It also suggests that a magnet can be used to possibly realign the shutter mechanism.  

It's really hard to say since the error can have more than one cause.

Repair is likely a losing proposition, due to a lack of parts availability or finding someone willing to work on it.  If cursory troubleshooting doesn't identify the problem. I would recommend abandoning it.

Are you using any 3rd Party lenses on the camera. The way EOS film bodies showed error codes was a flashing battery light or “BC” error. 3rd Party lenses usually caused error codes. I’ve found new 3rd party lenses from today just don’t work well EOS film bodies. But a new Canon brand EF lens will work fine with the older EOS film body. Only Canon knows its lens communication. It’s not licensed out to 3rd Party companies to make lenses for. Instead it’s reversed engineered to work. But compatibility can broken when Canon makes changes in the code.
