Canon 550D autofocus motor broken, repairable?

Hi!

As stated in the title, the autofocus motor on my Canon 550D will spin anti-clockwise to autofocus, but can't spin clockwise. I can hear the motor clicking but the barrel won't move. Is there any chance I can replace the motor, is that even possible? I've cleaned all relevant contacts and the lens is lined up correctly.

Thanks!

Greetings,

Before taking the lens apart, try this:

  1. Take the lens off of your camera.
  2. Put the lens in MF mode.
  3. Twist the FOCUS ring (the tip of the lens) all the way to one side (extend it). You may hear a click noise or two, this is good, but don't FORCE the lens.
  4. Twist the FOCUS ring all the way to the opposite side (retract it). Again, you may hear a couple of clicking noises. What we hope is happening is the focusing motor being put back into its proper place.
  5. Put the lens back on the camera.
  6. Put the lens in AF mode.
  7. Turn the camera on.
  8. Put the camera in AUTO or P mode.
  9. Take a test photo.

Report the results.

The AF motor is in the lens not the camera. The lens gears can become dislocated especially if you try to focus it while it is focusing. It is best to not mess with the lens while the camera is on. If the above steps don't work the lens is likely done and not a good candidate for repair.

If your camera is fitted with the EF-S 18-55mm lens, try the "fix" that shadowsports outlined.

If that works, great!

If it doesn't work or it fails again, no need to do anything to the camera. ebiggs1 is right... the problem is in the lens, not the camera. Might be bets to replace the lens. EF-S 18-55mm IS STM are widely available and not terribly

expensive. If you have considered any lens upgrades, this might be the time to do it.

The focusing mechanicals are all in the lens. Nothing in the body.

What is the lens?  If ideas offered above do not put the mechanism back in place, the value of the lens dictates whether it is junk or a candidate for repair.
