Bug on EOS-R when attempting to set the WB with the color picker from the Q-menu?

Hi!

So, a bit specific, but...

I attempt to set the WB from the Q menu, and I want to set the specific color temp to do say (say, 3800K).

I press Q, press the WB selectio on the right, then move to color temp selector. The menu display says I must press The AF selector in order to set the the temp (as shown below). But when I do, the button doesn't allow me set it, I switch the AF zone, as it's supposed to.

Is that not a bug? Is there not way to actually use that feature, other than assigning no function at all to that specific button?

When you see that screen displayed, you can also touch the part of the screen where it shows the icon for the AF point selection button.

On your camera do you use a custom button configuration for the AF point button, maybe direct AF method selection? If so this seems to override the default functions of the AF point button and that could be why you are not able to use that button when setting the Kelvin value.

These screens are from my EOS R camera where I also customised the AF point selection button for direct AF method selection. I suspect that if you return the AF point button to its default configuration then it will work to allow you to set the Kelvin value.

When you press the Q/Set button to display the quick control buttons, you need to select the White Balance setting from the right side, it's the third one down. You can do that with the touchscreen or move using the cross key buttons around the Q/Set button.

You need to move along the list of white balance settings to the K setting, this is where you choose Kelvin temperature. Once you reach the K setting the screen will show you which button to press to enter a Kelvin value. I no longer have the EOS R, but for my EOS R6 I need to press the SET button to be able to enter the Kelvin value.

Alternatively you can set the white balance from the camera menus. White balance is on the SHOOT4 menu in your camera. Once you have chosen Kelvin temperature you then turn the main dial next to the shutter to change the temperature value. I found this on page 101 of the manual.

Hey Brian!

I just re-checked, apparently on the EOS-R firmware 1.8.0, pressing SET at that stage has no effect. The menu explicitly states "<AF selector> to set color temp>".

It does not appear that I can set another button to confirm selection of setting color temp (like.... SET, which seems to me as well would be an appropriate choice!).

If I press <AF selector> as the menu asks for, the selector just perform its assigned task (which is moving on to the next AF zone) and takes me out of the Q-menu althoghether!

I always somewhat judge people who do the following (picture of a screen), but sometimes it's a quickest way I guess:

Alternately, you can just shoot in RAW and set the WB in post, where you have full control and the leisure to make multiple adjustments to make sure you get it right.

Wow, well thought, precisely the thing.

I had set it to OFF earlier and it worked, but I didn't like the idea of having a button that is very conveniently placed doing nothing, which is why I asked the question here.

Upon further testing, here's the complete behavior:

* If the AF point button is set to its default or OFF, then it can be used as prescribed by the color picker menu.

* If it is set to ANY other function through button customization, then the color picker cannot be used as prescribed by the menu. Whatever other function you have set it to will be what happens.

My guess is that the function priorisation in the software is such that Defaults < Color picker menu assigned function < Customization, e.g. setting a custom function boosts the priority and overrides this.

Still a tad disappointing from a UI/UX perspective. I get that the priorisation has a logic and from that perspective makes sense, customized functions by user should probably have a high priority and override defaults. I just would have made mode sense, and I tought intuitively and you did as well it seems, to have a Q-press make that happen. Instead of a random button.

Thanks for the tip!

Ah, well, I'm unlikely to change my whole workflow and force myself to mess around with RAW all the time just for that niche behavior. I'll set WB differently and it's not something I'd set every shot anyways 😉
