[Bug] in Canon R6 Mark II: AF Lock Issue with AF-ON Button Customization (Needs Firmware Fix!

I’ve been experiencing a very strange and frustrating AF lock issue on the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. This specific behavior is causing me to miss critical shutter moments during my shoots.

Summary of the Problem:

Settings: I have "Servo AF" assigned to the AF-ON button through the customization menu.

The Issue: After shooting a burst using the AF-ON button, the AF stays locked as if the shutter button is still being held halfway down, even after I completely release all buttons.

The Frustration: While this is happening, the multi-controller (joystick) becomes completely unresponsive, making it impossible to move the AF point to follow the action.

The Anomaly: Unlike the normal behavior of the touch shutter, the AF point stays green and refuses to return to its idle state (white) even after the subject is gone.

Note: The issue disappears immediately if I press the shutter button halfway, but in a live performance shooting environment, that tiny fraction of a second is enough to miss a decisive moment.

I'm sharing this video in hopes that it reaches Canon for a much-needed firmware fix. Has anyone else encountered this "sticky" AF behavior?

Actually, this freeze occurs even after taking just 3 frames in Single Shooting mode. This clearly proves that it is not a buffer-related issue.

Based on my testing, the trigger is not the burst speed itself, but rather when the Shutter button and the AF-ON button are released simultaneously. This is a specific logic conflict that causes the AF system and the UI to lock up.

Something very similar happened to me. With me the AF blocked in excellent light conditions in SERVO AF mode with the shutter in fast continuous H+. It happens several times, for no apparent reason. The camera has the correct focus on the display, I have the shooting button pressed all the way down and the photo doesn't come out. I try to realise what may be wrong, and I can't find anything that justifies the anomaly. I have a Canon R6 Mark II camera, RF Zoom 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS, and RF Zoom 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS.

Photographer in cRaw, and I have no buffer problems in the camera. I use 300mb/s cards. I did tests, and it supports more photos than I need in my work.

Thank you for sharing your case. Your experience with 300MB/s cards further proves that this is not a buffer or memory card speed issue, contrary to what some might suggest.

I have also reproduced this consistently even in Single Shooting mode, which confirms it is definitely a firmware-level logic conflict. I have identified that the freeze is triggered when the Shutter and AF-ON buttons are released at the exact same time.

I really hope Canon acknowledges this systemic bug and provides a firmware fix as soon as possible for all of us.

“ I have identified that the freeze is triggered when the Shutter and AF-ON buttons are released at the exact same time. “

There is a key piece to your issue that you not mentioned.  I tri d to point it out earlier, but you ignored it.

zif your [AF-IN] button is switching the camera to Servo AF, then the camera is set to One Shot AF….which locks focus when you release the [AF-ON] button.

I don’t think this is a bug, at all. You say pressing the shutter clears it, as it should. It locks focus because you’re pressing the Shutter when it switches back One Shot AF.

Try this. I assume that you have the focus confirmation beep disabled.  Try enabling it. I would expect a beep the next time the focus locks up, especially if Oreview af is enabled.

Luke I said earlier, don’t fall into the trap of thinking anything you don’t understand is a bug.
