Best 3rd party lenses for canon eos R50

Kmzz

Hi, I am a beginner in photography. I have been looking for the best camera I can start with as a beginner, that is, my 1st camera and the Canon R50 ticked all my boxes.

However, I do not know whether the camera will work with 3rd party lenses like sigma and Tamron. Are there any good 3rd party lenses that will work with the canon R50? If there are, which do you recommend?

FYI, I'm not planning to buy a lot of equipment, I just want an extra lens other than the RF 50mm 1.8 and the standard kit lens.
I'm planning to get into videography later in the future but since I'm starting my journey, I thought it best to learn the basics of photography and videography.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You can use EF mount lenses from any manufacturer with an EF to RF adapter. Unfortunately, Canon will not allow third parties to make RF mount lenses.

There are 3rd Party Sigma RF-S lenses.

Hi and welcome to the forum:
I think you are wise concentrating on skills, but since your question is about 3rd-party lenses I shall specifically address that question.

With regards to the statement by @Baszl that is not quite true any more.
In the last 3 months Canon announced do allow 3rd-party lens makers to create lenses with the full suite of AF and stabilization, but only currently for the RF-S lens system and on a case-by-case basis - a policy the also share with Nikon.
Since the R50 is an APS-C camera there is already a set of Sigma lenses that are now coming available, as announced by Sigma: SIGMA Canon RF Mount lenses | Contents | SIGMA Corporation (sigma-global.com)
The Sigma 18-55 is the first to be on the market and, as you can see, from their site, we should be seeing the other lenses indicated, plus likely more from both Sigma and Tamron in the future.

These lenses are superior to their native Canon equivalents in aperture and image quality, and are also very small and light, which is great for both photography and videography.  Although the price is greater, but you get what you pay for - if the intent it for quality, they are certainly the way to go right now.

Note this video was shot using the much more demanding 32MP sensor on the EOS R7, the 24MP sensor on the R50 should actually be even better in terms of image quality.

This is super helpful as I myself have been looking for a 300mm lens for the R50, my job requires that I have a device with atleast this minimum capability. I don't know if one is even available for the R50 or if I need to find another camera that has one available.

Any recommendations for a Marine Biologist new to taking pictures offshore of moving subjects in and out of the water. I don't quite know which camera to get.

The R50 can accommodate most EF mount lenses with the use of the Canon EF/R adapter. There are also some modestly priced RF lenses that work well. The form factor of the R50 is fairly small but I have mounted some decent size lenses on it with good results.

I listed a couple that would fit your 300mm requirement. Also, with the R50 being a APS-C camera the the lenses noted will have an bit more extended reach.

The lower cost lenses are not going to perform great in low light so that is something to be aware of on overcast, morning and evening photography.

  • EF/RF adapter - $130
  • RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM - $650
  • Sigma 100-400mm F/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C - $630 (bigger than the RF and heavy)

You may want to spend a little more and purchase an F4 or F2.8 lens. There are several available in Canon EF, Sigma EF and Tamron EF lenses. it will give you more opportunities in low light.

Thank you so much for this. I'm a novice and now about to purchase the R50 hence my question about lens meeting my 300mm requirements.  Camera, adapter (cheapest tou mentioned) and lens are  already costing me about $1000 so maybe I'll go with the first option you gave.

I'm looking at the

Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless Camera RF-S18-45mm F4.5-6.3 is STM Lens Kit, 24.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) Sensor, 4K Video, Hybrid Camera, Photo and Video, Vlogging, Content Creator, RF Mount, White for $749

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras for $159

Canon Mount Adapter EF - EOS R, Compatible with EOS RP, EOS R, EOS R6, EOS R5 for $199

Just hoping that these are compatible. (Purchasing a case, extra batteries and SD cards as well)

Avoid buying bundled "kits" from Amazon. Stick with Canon Authorized Dealers. Avoid online marketplaces such as Amazon. Buy from Adorama or B&H Photo NYC or any other Canon Authorized Dealers. I also don't recommend investing in the Canon EF 70-300mm lens lineup. It's very poor optically and uses a very slow AF.

Crazy that you said that because I'm scared after my experience attempting to purchase the DSLR T7 w th3 standard lens and thw 75-300mm from Amazon, TWICE. I started this process in September and the first time I got exercise equipment, then Amazon sent the replacement and I got cereal.

Then Amazon 3 days ago charged me after the return label they created, but told me via email to disregard expired. I just spent the entire day yesterday trying to get my 640.93 USD refunded to my card. Had to fill out a refund request even after they admitted they were wrong. Now I have to wait 3 days to hear back from them.

The reason I was gonna use Aamazon is that I have a $200 gift card with them.

So confused.

Camera gear stick with Canon Authorized Dealers. Whether that be a local store or an online one such as Adorama.
