dmaymay,

What kind of lens did you want to buy?

The 5D Mark II is full frame interchangeable lens camera with an EF mount, so I would think any EF lens would work.

The EOS 5D Mark II is an interchangeable lens camera. So any Canon EF lens can be used with it. But NOT EF-S lenses. Those are INCOMPATIBLE with Full Frame cameras. So if you search Canon EOS 5D Mark II you’ll only see the body alone or a lens mounted. Is there something that you specifically take pictures of. What type of stuff do you take pictures of. Canon has a wide range of lenses all the way from 8mm-1200mm. They have zoom lenses and prime (fixed focal length) lenses available. So we need to know what you take pictures and of.

dmaymay,

As Demetrius said, the flange on the EF-S lenses extends farther back into the body of the camera and you risk damaging your mirror. If you do buy a lens, stick with the EF lenses.

Steve Thomas

Well EF-S lenses are physically designed in such a way. That it physically can’t be mounted on Full Frame bodies. You can try all you want but it won’t mount. Even if you try to mount it on an EOS film body. It still won’t mount at all. Even though EF-S lenses came later on. Also 3rd Party manufacturers make lenses for Canon EF Mount. Make sure they’re designed for Full Frame bodies. They make APS-C lenses with the regular Full Frame EF Mount. These lenses will produce vignetting or even worse. Damage to the reflex mirror. Then just because a lens mounts doesn’t mean it’s compatible. It’s up to the 3rd Party Manufacturer to ensure compatibility. NOT Canon because they don’t tell 3rd Parties how their lens mount communication works.

Following up on Rick's suggestion about buying at the Canon Refurbished Store (which would be my first pick as well).  If you have a reputable camera store in your area, go in and check for used EF lenses.  Most camera stores take used gear in trade (if it is in good working condition).  I have bought many gently used lenses this way over the years and have saved a lot of money.

Between Digital and Film, current number of working cameras is at 27.

Of course that isn't true. EF-s 10-18mm and EF-s 10-22mm zooms are popular lenses that people modify to use on a FF camera. I won't tell you or any body how nor do it nor do I recommend it but it is possible and is very easy so saying it's impossible isn't accurate.

dmaymay there are and were millions of EF lenses made they are everywhere. Finding them shouldn't be a problem.

Searching ebay for "Canin EF lenses" brought up over 38,000+ hits. And that didn't include SIgma or Tamron.
