Rebel T7 Additional Telephoto Lens

Hamop54

I have the Rebel T7 with an 18-55 mm zoom lense. I want to add the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM @$234.99. It's not a $1200 lense but it seems like a match for the camera based on the retail price range.

Any thoughts on this?

I got the Rebel as a gift and have been enjoying ever since.

I did not mean to imply that your answer was not complete, just that there are some *Canon* lenses in the wild with fixed apertures, and not just some off-brand mirror lenses.

Thanks!

Hi Kevin:

I didn't see your answer in that context. 🙂  My point is that while something might be technically correct, it may not help the OP in resolving their issue as posted.  I have seen cases where the discussion becomes a technical conversation that can leave the OP and their request way behind.  For that reason, I limit my answers generally to what will serve the OP.  In this case, because they don't have the funds, or the camera to use such a lens, I left anything is not specifically helpful to them out of the conversation.

As an addendum, the 50mm focal length is a difficult one to use. It usually seems just a bit to short or just a bit too long.

Personally, I generally tell folks unless you have a specific need for a 50mm prime, don't buy one. Especially if it is your only lens or perhaps just your second lens. One very good reason to buy one is, if you need a very fast lens. They come in fast apertures like f1.8, f1.4 and even f1.2.  If you ever find the need for a fast prime look at something in the  30mm-35mm FL. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens is a fine example. A lens like the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens would be a good choice, too. Again if ever a fast prime is in your sights.

Hi Trevor,

I purchased the lense you suggested and it's very nice.

When I view a picture taken with this lense at 250mm, on my PC monitor it looks similar to what I saw looking through my 7X binoculars.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Dan:

I am really glad the recommendation worked for you and you can get results you enjoy.  Good luck with the trains and the grandkids! 🙂

"The reviews are helpful in that I get some good info ..."

Maybe!  You can't trust reviews. Some are OK and even good. Some are not. The problem is learning which is which. Take them with a grain of salt or as some enjoyable time gulping entertainment but not so much as gospel. You get better info here.
