RF 70-200 F2.8 L IS noise when zooming?

Hello everybody,

since I hope many of you here have this amazing lens, I would like your opinion about mine:

I snagged one used and while making very sharp and nice pictures, it makes some weird noise when zooming between 100 and 200mm, even with camera body switched off. I have made a short video trying to record it.

If I turn the gear very slowly, I can feel a single click for every small movement like a precision movement to find correct focal length, I don't know if it's correct to describe it this way.

Since pictures are good I wouldn't return it (being bought on Vinted I could hardly return it) but I definitely accept feedback.

Greetings,

When I replied this morning my phone was in do not disturb 😄 and I played your video but didn't hear the sound.  I just re-watched the video and heard the sound.  You lens needs to go to Canon for inspection and repair.

Don't sell yourself short.  You'll get the best experience from your lens if it's working. as Canon intended.  😉 ❤️

Greetings,

If by "turn the gear very slowly" you are referring to the Focus or Zoom ring, then no, my lens is buttery smooth with just the right amount of drag.  There is no "single click", "precision movement" or "noise" on my lens.  Or are you referring to the Control Ring?

If it's the former, it may be worth sending to Canon for inspection.

Thanks for your feedback.

I have brought it to a Canon local store and after confirming it was not normal behavior, I managed to get a refund from seller (I had to use words such lawyers and so on to fully "convince" him).

I ended up snagging brand new F4 spending a bit less.

The f4 is a nice lens, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Glad in the end everything worked out!

Greetings ,

We're all happy you were able to return the defective lens.  The RF 70-200 is in a class of its own.  It's one of the best lenses Canon has ever made.  Magic happens when you use it.
