Currently have the 70-200/4, looking at the 100-500 - primarily use this for kids swimming and Motorsport- specifically desert racing. Has anyone used the 100-500 for either of these? Any examples? Thanks!

Greetings,
Motorsports will not be a problem. The 100-500 will work great. Swimming should be ok as well. If it's indoor, the venue needs to be well lit. The challenge here will be using a fast enough shutter to freeze the action. If possible, a tripod would be helpful in either situation. For your own comfort and steadiness. For shorter distances indoors a 70-200 f2.8 should also be considered.
