I'm looking to upgrade my kit lens (18-55mm). Any recommendations for a beginner? I recently purchased a 50mm and looking to build my collection/improve photography skills. Thanks!

The best upgrade lens for a T5 is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens by far. No question.. Almost the least is a 50mm f1.8 so I would return it and buy the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens. In either case your original kit lens or the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens has 50mm so you are simply duplicating what is already there.

Hello mmonss, I see you recently joined....welcome.
I would like to take a different approach and ask the question what are your interests in photography? Specifically you want to purchase a lens for what purpose? Sports, landscape, portraiture....
Your purchase should be focused on some type of goal and not just generally wanting a new lens. A couple months back I was spending a lot of time in the city and carried my 24-70mm and found in a lot of situations I just wasn't getting wide enough to get the composition I wanted, I picked up a 15-35mm specifically for street and couldn't be happier.
Defining you current goal may help point you to the right lens. And the great news, there are so many quality EF-S and EF lenses available now at pretty good prices.
