Hey guys !
First I appreciate the time you take to read this post and keep in mind I am an ABSOLUTE beginner so any tips for filming and shooting would be insanely helpful ! Thanks in advance.

after some time filming on my phone I decided to upgrade and go full hands on deck with gear

I bought a canon EOS r50 with the lens kit

my main focus would be on videography and commercial videos products edits and cars this is what I love the most !

but the lens kit doesn’t really fulfill my needs I’ve searched around google and did some due diligence

i am looking for a budget lens with f/1.2 to f/2.8

18mm to 50mm with IS

something that is good for filming even at low light

Greetings,

Thanks for telling us what you are looking for and intended use.

Your aspirations are above average.  What is your actual "budget"?

The Sigma 18-50 f2.8 would be a great lens for your R50.  Its been licensed by Canon.

I appreciate the comment !
my budget is moving around $400-$900

I saw the sigma lens a lot in my research but I always felt like there is a catch it’s cheap, good parameters, I am wondering if there is anything with IS before I rush to the sigma

my plan is to get one this week or next one since I got some projects to film 😄

I have a pod cast lined up as well as a promo / commercial for a restaurant hopefully Ill be able to make some good shots

Hi and welcome to the forum:

You might want to correct  your title as you indicated the R5, which is actually a high-end full-frame camera, and that is confusing.  First, understand that investing in a great lens will provide you better results than buying a high-end body with cheaper glass.  A lens is a much longer investment, as bodies come and go with relative frequency, but a lens can deliver excellent results for decades.

With that in mind, while I absolutely recognize your expectations, and the excellent options my respected colleagues have offered, if you were prepared to add a small amount to your budget, you could get the absolutely fabulous RF14-35f/4 IS USM.

It will perform beautifully on a R50 body, and its image stabilization will be a boon for hand-held videography, something that is lacking on the Sigma units (which are otherwise excellent). It is weather sealed, is built like a tank and, with lens corrections turned on (which is the default normally), it will provide high levels of lens correction, which is often a challenge with ultra-wide lenses.  Lens corrections for RAW images are now automatically applied in all 3rd-party post-production software, and there is no focus breathing when you zoom in or out - focus breather is a phenomenon where the view expands or contracts as the lens changes focus but the focal length is supposed to stay constant.  Focus breathing can be quite disconcerting for those encountering that phenomenon in videos.  The constant f/4 aperture will allow you to maintain that aperture for video work and the wider aperture will help you to shoot in low light, and also use it to separate objects from background clutter.  The wider 14mm, short focal range will make significant differences in getting up close and personal to parts of cars.  I should note that crop-frame cameras, like  your R50 will be at a disadvantage at the wide end for ANY lens (both RF and RF-S) attached to them because of the cropping effect of the sensor.

It has the advantage this if you decide at a later date to move to full-frame, it will work beautifully with them.  You can get one from Canon's Refurb store for a reduced price.  These are new but over-stock, new but open box, demo, or display units, but 'good as new' and come with a Canon warranty.
Shop Canon Refurbished RF14-35mm F4 L IS USM | Canon U.S.A., Inc.

I have this lens myself and can attest to the high quality of the build and optical performance.

Hey Trevor !
Thank you for suggesting this lens it does look awesome, however where I live it’s too expensive after tax. (Like $1800-$1900)

is there any other lens of sorts ?
or I should just stick with the sigma and some filters and use a gimbal (I already have one if I didn’t mention)

Hi - your pricing sounds like where live in NZ - the exchange rate and tax are a killer!

Well, given the budget, I would stick with the Sigma lenses that are available.  I think optically they are better and have the required fast and open aperture.  Just be aware the lenses do not have image stabilization and neither does the R50.  If image stabilization, especially for video, is important, then you would have to stick with the Canon lenses for the moment.

FWIW, the R1, R3, R5 variants and R6variants are all higher-end full frame bodies. The other FF unit is the R8.
The R50 lies in the APS-C (crop sensor) category after the R7 and R10.  Still a good camera, but it will behave differently with lenses compared to the full-frame bodies.

Hey Trevor,

I don't live in the NZ, i live in israel 🙂 which is also an exchange rate and tax killer sadly.

what would you say about these 2 lenses

CANON RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM
Canon RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM

in addition the sigma lenses are NO where to be found here.

Lastly, how can i know which ND filter to buy for a lens, MM speaking

Thanks Trevor for mentioning.  I was under the belief that the title had a typo.  R5 / R50
