Hi - will a refurbished Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens work with a Rebel XS? I got the Rebel as a gift in 2008, and it works fine otherwise. I've always used the lens it came with, but I am going on a trip to Kenya and looking to upgrade without spending too much because I don't use the camera often to invest in anything more.

Not only will the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM work on your granddaddy Rebel XS but it will work very well and would be a good first choice. It will be an easy lens to get to know and use. However, if I was to be making a trip to Kenya I would certainly look at one of the 150-600mm super zooms. Especially if this is a one time trip. But if you did decide to go that route I would advise getting it early and dong some practice shooting with it as 150 to 600mm is a lot of focal length and a lot of lens. With 600mm you can get up close and personal with the wildlife and not be in any danger. A monopod is a good investment too.
Off topic while shopping for a lens get extra batteries and several memory cards.

Yes, any EF-S or EF lens will work with that camera. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is a sharp lens.

Thank you all! Going to purchase and start testing asap. Maybe I'll be comfortable enough to upgrade before my trip per ebiggs1 recommendation (going in Feb '24). thanks again!

You can't go wrong sticking with the Canon line but unfortunately Canon does not make a 150-600mm super zoom for your camera. Canon does have a 100-400mm super zoom but you give up 200mm and it cost about twice as much.
