Canon EF 24-70 2.8L  Lens - Won't work on apertures other than f/ 2.8

I was given a Canon EF 24-70 2.8L  Lens by a friend to use on my new Canon EOS Rebel T7

It only works on f/ 2.8 and any other aperture it gives me an Error 01, it also shows very dark in the viewfinder and has a black circle in the center of the viewfinder as well. The kit lens that came with this camera works fine.  Is the lens broken or am I doing something wrong?

Greetings,

Is this a first generation lens?  If so, the lens is broken.  (Suffered a failure).

This is a common issue.  It's often the flex ribbon cable and/or aperture module that fails.  I suggest looking at a used replacement on KEH, adorama or B&H.

Thank YOU! It appears to be a very old version of this lens, yes.

Sorry when last question, the fact that it works on f 2.8 and no other apertures and is really dark in the viewfinder, probably means its got problems, maybe more than one? It is very old generation of this lens.
