Canon 300mm f/2/8L non-IS lens drop-in filter compatibility with IS lenses

Will the drop-in screw-in filter holders for the 300, 400 and 500mm IS lenses fit the older non-IS lenses. The release button is different, but they look similar. I have the gelatin filter holder. I cannot find a screw-in or polarizing filter holder for this older lens.

Older lens is 48mm; newer 52mm.
