Better lens option than the EF 70-300 II for an R8 at a similar price and focal length?

Shopping for a telephoto zoom lens for an R8 I recently bought. And I’m close to buying the EF 70-300 II after research and my budget. Just want to see if there was something I missed.

There is the RF 100 to 400 for $650

You have the R8 I can't recommend you buying almost any new lens that is an RF EF series. (there is one or two but not that one)

I could maybe see it if you fund a good used EF but if you are buying new go RF. The Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens is a so much better choice I can't even think why you wouldn't go with it over the EF 70-300mm and model.

Look almost all of the time you will be at the long end of a tele zoom. That's just the way it is so that 100mm is a bonus. If its wildlife you want to shoot 400mm is really the smallest FL you want to have. The 30mm difference at the short end is nothing.

I think you mean *not* an RF series.

Darn it, yes I do. I'll correct it, thanx.

I am in total agreement with kvbarkley and EB!

Although EF lenses work well on the R series, usually as good as they did on DSLR's. But if you want to get the most out of the R systems you should pair the cameras with RF lenses. AF is faster and IQ is better because of the shorter flange distance.

My wife used the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM II the first couple of weeks after buying the R6 but switched to the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM, mainly for weight concerns (she is disabled). It is a much better lens. She now uses it [100-400] on the R6 II. As others have said, 400mm is about as short as you want to go, but that depends on how good you are at getting close to your subjects.

As if you need another recommendation, i'm in full agreement with the others.Definitely buy the RF100-400mm.It's longer and doesnt need an adapter to use on your camera. It's well worth the extra $50 cost
