50 1.2 not focusing

Philmans123

Hi All,

My 50 1.2 has stopped focusing completely. I can manually focus but the auto-focus is dead. There has been no 'trauma' to the lens. It was working one day and then nothing the next. Any thoughts/suggestions before I send it in to Canon?

Thanks,

Phil

"You also wouldn't be able to control the aperture automatically or manually."

That may or may not be true. I agree it is not a lens contact issue, however. It is almost to never a contact issue unless someone abuses them by cleaning them improperly!

The EF 50mm f1.2L is one of my very most favorite prime lenses. It is a somewhat difficult lens to master as focus can be critical. It is big and it is heavy. It is a very old design and yours needs to go to Canon for service.

Which camera body?  Does the AF work with other lenses?

5D4 and 5DSR. All other lens are working with both bodies. Thanks for the response.

Hi, OP it sounds like a lens issue. Is the lens set to AF mode. The 50 F/1.2 is a USM lens that supports full time manual focus. Without the camera metering system being active. Does the camera even register AF at all.

I agree, I think it is in the lens. I am able to control the aperture fully and it is obviously affecting the image, (i.e., DOF and brightness). All AF controls are active but the lens itself is dead.

Thanks for the response.

Does the lens work on a different camera body if you have one or can access one. Are you using any 3rd party accessories if so remove them and try again from factory.

Will the lens AF on the other body you mentioned. Or does it continue not to AF but you still can control the aperture.

It sounds like your AF motor is dead.
