Canon discontinued this lens, but are there any spots where it's still available in stores?

Your best bet would probably be to look at brick and mortar camera stores.

Also worth looking at the used market.  KEH has several.  I have bought from them several times in the past and always been pleased with their used gear.

I got one for under $1000 like new from the Canon direct store. It was in their refurbished section. I did get it when they were having a 20% off sale. The 24-70/f2.8 L is out of stock right now, but you may want to check the site once or twice a day, nice lenses go fast. I've have very good luck with the Canon refurbished lens program - I think they are often better than new stock - each one is fully checked out and calibrated by a Canon tech before sale. They come with a 90 day warranty (vs 1 year for new), but I find that is plenty of time to see it there is a problem.

This lens is also still listed in the refurbished section of the Canon Direct Store but is out of stock at the moment. Worth keeping an eye on.
