new PIXMA TR4720 won't recognize ink cartridges

I just bought a new TR4720.  I installed the ink cartridges, trying to follow the (not very useful) video on the website.  It still keeps telling me to open the cover and install ink cartridges.  I removed the obvious piece of orange tape, as shown on the website (but NOT in the fairly useless video), however there also appears to be orange tape over the print head and contacts (see photo).  I don't THINK I'm supposed to remove that, especially since it says not to touch those parts of the cartridge.  However, after several other attempts, including the advice from a similar post to try pressing down on top of the installed cartridge and wiggling, I attempted to see it it would come off.  It does not appear to.

Is there anything else I should try before returning this piece of garbage to the store and giving Canon a big middle finger for their lack of customer support?

Hello!

It sounds incredibly frustrating, but the "orange tape" over the print head/contacts on your new Canon TR4720 should NOT be removed; it's part of the cartridge. The persistent "install ink cartridges" error usually means the cartridges aren't seated firmly enough. Remove both cartridges, ensure ALL peelable orange protective strips/caps are gone from the top/bottom vents/nozzles (not the contacts), then reinsert them with a firm push until you hear a clear "click." Also, ensure the blue/gray lock lever is fully up. If this doesn't work after a power cycle, contacting Canon support or returning the printer are your next best steps.

Hello,
Installed cartridges in my new TR4720, removed visible tape, but printer still says 'install ink cartridges.' Not sure if tape over print head/contact should be removed. Tried pressing/wiggling—no luck. Any fix before I return it?

I bought a Pixma TR4720 18 months ago but i am just now powering it on and trying it out.  I put the cartridges in correctly but it says "Install ink cartridges".  I took them out and put them back in twice, same error. On the fourth try it finally worked!  I swear I did it correctly every time, very strange.
