Why is my Canon MX882 using up cyan and magenta ink when I am only printing in grayscale?

I have a Canon MX882 All in one printer that has recently started using up my cyan and magenta ink, but I am only printing in grayscale. Is this a print head problem?

Hello.

With the grayscale setting, the color inks would be used in certain situations.

First, make sure that the media type is set to Plain Paper.  If a photo paper is selected, the color inks would be used.

Also, disable duplex printing.  When this option is used, the dye based inks will be used for printing.

The printer is set to plain paper, and I've only duplex printed 4 pages of text - no graphics, so using 2/3rds of the color ink tanks is a lot for just 4 pages. Could there be something else going on?
