Why has my new pixma iX6820 started printing in spurts? It prints 2 or 3 passes and stops.

New Pixma iX6820 is printing in spurts. It makes 2 or 3 printing passes and stops for 10-12 seconds then repeats. It takes forever to print a single page. What's going on with my printer?
