Poor scanning quality from my PIXMA TR7020

Travler
Apprentice

I've had my TR7020 for 3 1/2 years now, and have been very pleased with it.  The scanner has always given professional looking document scans, but recently that quality has gone way down.  The .pdf documents are readable, but fuzzy.

Are there adjustments I can make, parts I can clean, or parts that need to be replaced, to improve the image back to the original quality?

TIA, Mark

Hi Travler! Thanks for posting in the Canon Community Forum. I see that your PIXMA TR7020 scanned images are fuzzy.

The scan unit is a sealed unit. You won’t be able to replace any of the parts inside that unit without compromising the air seal. Doing so, can cause more issues.

I can show you how to troubleshoot this issue and determine if there is a fix.

To get started, you should use the printer to make a copy. You can use the buttons on the printer to make a copy of a document. If you need instructions for making a copy, please open the following section of the manual:

https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR7000%20series/EN/UG/ug-043.html

If the copied document is good, then the scanner should be okay. If the scanner is okay, then you are dealing with a software issue on your computer, and I recommend reinstalling the Printer Driver and Scan Utility. I’ll have instructions for that a little later in this message.

If the copied document is blurry, you should clean the Platen glass and Document Cover. If you are using the document feed, you can also clean the feeding mechanism.

For instructions that will show you how to clean the Platen and Document Cover, please visit the following section of the manual.

https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR7000%20series/EN/UG/ug-141.html

Please note that there are two pieces of glass that need to be cleaned. To the left of the larger piece of glass, you will see a thin piece of glass. This is the glass that is used when you are using the feeder to scan your document. Please make sure to clean that thinner piece of glass in addition to the larger piece of glass.

For instructions that will show you how to clean the Auto Document Feeder, please visit the following section of the manual:

https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR7000%20series/EN/UG/ug-142.html

If cleaning the glass and the automatic document feeder does not help, there is nothing else you can do on your own. There is likely a problem inside the scanning unit (which is sealed).

If your copied documents are turning good and you have a Windows computer, I recommend that you reinstall the Printer Driver and Scan Utility. It is available on the following website.

https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-tr7020

If you have a Mac computer, please reinstall the IJ Scan Utility Lite from the same website.

When the website opens, click on the SOFTWARE & DRIVERS option to the right of the picture of the printer. Then, make sure the website is detecting the proper Operating System and Version. After that, you can scroll down and look for the Printer Driver and Scan Utility Installer Ver. 1.03. It is the last option on the list, so you will need to scroll down to find it. For Mac computers, please look or the IJ Scan Utility Lite Ver.4.1.1 (second option).

After you click on the DOWNLOAD button, please wait for the file to finish downloading. Then, open the file and run it. If you have a Mac computer, you will need to open the downloaded file and then double-click on the symbol that looks like a cardboard box.

When the installation is complete, try scanning. If you are still having issues, please write back and let us know what you have done.

The printer does come with a one-year warranty. If you purchased a four-year warranty extension directly from Canon on or around the date of purchase and cleaning the scanner (glass and feeder) does not help, I recommend that you create a Canon Account, register the printer, and call us at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 PM Eastern time.

You can create your Canon Account and register the printer at the following website:

https://myprofile.americas.canon.com/us/signin?redirect=%2Fus%2FaddProducts

If the warranty has expired and cleaning the glass and feeder does not help, it may be more cost effective to purchase a replacement than to pay someone to fix your scanner. Through our Canon Upgrade Program, we can offer you a discount and free shipping on a new printer. If you are interested in that, please call (866) 443-8002 from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday to speak with one of our sales agents who would be happy to help you.

I hope this information helps. Thanks for choosing Canon.
