Pixma MP160 prints fine from docs, not from downloaded files

My printer works fine when I print from a word processing file, but when I try to print something like a form downloaded from a website, it comes out very faint. These are black and white documents.  Any suggestions? I changed the printer cartridge, still happening.

Hello.

When printing from the web, or when printing web-based items, the color inks may end up being used.  Try printing a nozzle check pattern to make sure that all of the colors are printing correctly.  Visit the following link for details about this process:

That might explain part of the issue, but the same thing happens when I try to make a copy- hitting the "black" button. I'd assume this should only use the black cartridge, but the same thing is happening. I only want to use this printer for b/w so I would rather not buy a color cartridge.
