Pixma MG3500 paper feed not working

I purchased the printer just a few weeks ago and from the start the paper feed did not work well, always a message saying the printer out of paper when it was not.

Now the printer won't work at all.  It chews up one sheet but no printing.  I get a message on screen saying the printer is out of paper.

•  I had the same problem with MG3570. I went to two official Canon repair shops - they both said exactly the same thing, it was a roller fault common to this series. They said it was more expensive to fix than to buy new. I explained that the printer was only on its 2nd cartridge and had minimal usage but they said it was just a fault with the printer. Apparently, consumers are lucky if the rollers last a year!
