PIXMA TS7650i keeps failing to scan

I've always been a big fan of #Canon but the new TS7650i printer I've bought to replace my knackered old one is rubbish in comparison. I've given up trying to connect it to my HP laptop (using Windows 10) via wifi but using the cable doesn't work half the time. Another case of "improving" the technology by adding more whistles and bells, but it works less well.

I gave up trying to use the wifi connection because it was so infuriating. The new printer's in the same place as the old one using the same wifi but won't connect most of the time. So, instead I've been using the cable between my laptop and your crummy printer. Today I was trying to scan some work and used Scangear which always worked perfectly on my previous Canon printer. Today it brought up the preview ok but when I tried to scan it did about 50% but then stopped and came up with error code 157 message saying it could not connect. How can this be possible if it's just done a preview? This is infuriating. So I start again. This time it scans. I try to do another one - same error message. So far I've scanned 5 images and the printer has stopped more than 15 times to tell me it can't connect. Via a cable that has just worked! I'm a writer/illustrator and need to be able to put artwork on my laptop quickly and efficiently. The only thing the new Canon printer has succeeded in doing is driving me round the bend.
