To cut short a long story, I am trying to print photos and I keep having the same issues..
For one, it either doesn't detect the paper (getting a "paper ran out" error) or it keeps saying it's jammed. When it does seem to print something, the paper comes out with nothing on it, like WTF?
From what I can tell, there's nothing wrong with the rollers, as it seems to print normally otherwise. I've tried resetting the printer, as that seems to have fixed it the last I had some issues printing documents but that didn't work. I tried unplugging it and then plugging it back in but, again, that took me nowhere. Though I am having a harder go at printing from paint.NET, Image Garden, and Windows Photos, I don't think it's a software issue.
I don't think there's an issue with the paper I'm using, which is the semi-gloss paper, as I've printed photos with that before. However, it does seem to be more apt to print when I'm using the non-photo paper.
On a note, while I'm here, how do I print from the top part of the printer or is that really for copies and faxes?
If you've had this conundrum, how did you fix it?

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PIXMA MX492 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them Monday through Friday at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

I don't know if it will help for you, but I did find this. It talks about how to clean the encoder, it's a strip inside the front of the printer and easy to get to by opening the front of it. I don't know why the person above didn't send you the link on here on how to do it. It has pictures to help find where it's at, too
. I hope it helps. https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART164873
