PIXMA MG2550S gets error message when trying to scan

My Canon printer shows error "Code: 5,156,69" when trying to scan from my computer.

In short, it says cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:  Scanner is turned off or USB cable is disconntected.  However, the unit prints fine, and also allows copies to be made.

  Am using Windows 8.1
