PIXMA 860 not printing black even after several deep cleans.

Can further ideas be suggested regarding what actions I can take to overcome this lack of printing in black problem?

Considering the device is 13yrs old, I'm not surprised.  My initial thoughts would be the printhead. 

Maybe its time for a new printer?

When the printer doesn't prints black ink, the most likely reason is the print head nozzles which when clogged prevents it from releasing black ink onto the paper. It may also stop printing black if the black ink has run out or if the blank ink cartridge is clogged.
