No text printing from PIXMA TR8620a

I have a brand new Pixma TR8620a and it will not print text at all.  It prints images just fine, so I know the black ink works.  If I have a document with text and image, it prints only the image.  This is a NEW printer!! 

I've tried making sure the cartridge alignment is okay and it errors every time, referring me to the manual that I cannot locate.

Text printing uses a different black ink cartridge than photo printing.

Your PGBK black ink is not printing. Does the LCD screen show an ink level for PGBK? Did you run a nozzle check?
