Hi. Thank you for your post. I understand that you are being told that a "New Port Could Not Be Created" when you try to install the MP Drivers for your PIXMA MX492 on your Windows computer.
This error usually occurs when the computer is unable to set up a port for the printer. It could be that the computer already had a port for that specific printer or that there are remnants of a previous printer installation interfering with the setup. It may also be that there is an issue with the computer.
I can help you with this issue. However, the process of correcting this issue is very complex. Please note that they are written for Windows 10.
- Make sure that the printer is turned off. If you are using a USB cable to connect it to the computer, disconnect the cable.
- Turn off any other printers that are connected through the network, and then go to your computer.
- If the IJ Network Scan Utility is installed on your computer, uninstall it.
- Right-click on the START button.
- Click on CONTROL PANEL.
- Click on UNINSTALL A PROGRAM or PROGRAMS AND FEATURES.
- Look for the “Canon IJ Network Scan Utility.”
- If you find it, right-click on in and select UNINSTALL.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the program.
- The process may take several minutes.
- When you are done, close the window.
- Delete any print jobs.
- Right-click on the START button.
- Click on CONTROL PANEL.
- Click on DEVICES AND PRINTERS or VIEW DEVICES AND PRINTERS.
- When the Devices and Printers window opens, right-click on the MX490 series Printer.
- In the small menu that opens, click on SEE WHAT'S PRINTING.
- If there are any print jobs in the print queue, click on PRINTER as shown below:
- Click on CANCEL ALL DOCUMENTS.
- Close the print queue window.
- If there are other printers in the Devices and Printers window, repeat sub-steps 4(4) through 4(8) for each printer.
- When you are done, leave the Devices and Printers window open.
- Delete the printer's port.
- Right-click on the MX490 series printer.
- In the small menu that opens, click on PRINTER PROPERTIES. This option will be in the middle of the menu. Do not click on PROPERTIES option at the bottom of that small menu.
- If a small window opens providing you with the option of a Printer, an XPS Printer, and a Fax, select the Printer.
- When the Printer Properties window opens, click on the PORTS tab.
- When the Ports folder opens, you will see a box with three columns labeled “Port,” “Description,” and “Printer.”
- Use the scroll bar up and down to find a port that the MX490 series printer or fax is associated with. You will see “MX490 series” in the “Printer” column.
- Click on the port name to highlight the entire line.
- Click on the DELETE PORT button towards the bottom of the window.
- Click on the OK button to delete the port.
- Use the scroll bar to find any other ports that are associated with the MX490 series printer or fax.
- If there are other ports, repeat sub-steps 5(7) through 5(9) to delete all of the ports associated with this printer.
- When you are done, click on the APPLY button.
- Click on the OK button to close the Printer Properties window.
- Leave the Devices and Printers window open.
- Remove the printer from the Devices and Printers window.
- Right-click on the MX490 series printer.
- When the small menu opens, click on REMOVE DEVICE.
- When asked if you want to delete the printer, click YES or OK.
- If there are any other instances of the MX490 series printer in the window, repeat sub-steps 6(1) through 6(3) to remove them.
- Leave the window open for the next step.
- Remove the printer driver from the Devices and Printers window.
- Single-click on any remaining printer in the Devices and Printers window, such as the “FAX” or “Microsoft XPS Document Writer.”
- In the menu bar on the top of the window, click on PRINT SERVER PROPERTIES.
- When the Print Server Properties window opens, click on the DRIVERS tab.
- Click on the “Canon MX490 series” driver.
- Click on the REMOVE button.
- Click on the OK button.
- If there are any other “Canon MX490 series” drivers in the window, repeats sub-steps 7(4) through 7(6) to remove them.
- Close the Print Server Properties window.
- Close the Devices and Printers window.
- Uninstall the MP Drivers.
- Right-click on the START button.
- Click on CONTROL PANEL.
- Click on UNINSTALL A PROGRAM or PROGRAMS AND FEATURES.
- Use the scroll bar to find the “Canon MX490 series MP Drivers.”
- Right-click on the “Canon MX490 series MP Drivers.”
- Click on UNINSTALL.
- Follow the prompts to uninstall the MP Drivers.
- When you are done, close the Programs and Features window.
- Enable the Show hidden files and extensions option on your computer.
- Right-click on the START button and select the word RUN from the small menu that appears.
- Type the words “Control Panel” (without the parentheses) and then click OK.
- If you see VIEW BY CATEGORY in the upper right corner, change it to VIEW BY LARGE ICONS.
- Click on FOLDER OPTIONS or FILE EXPLORER OPTIONS.
- Click on the VIEW tab.
- Look for “Hidden files and folders.” You may have to use the scroll bar.
- Below “Hidden files and folder” click on SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
- Make sure the radio button next to “Show hidden files and folders” is filled in.
- A little further down, check to see if there is a check-mark next to “Hide extensions for known file types.”
- If there is a checkmark, click on that checkmark to remove it.
- When the checkmark is removed, click on the APPLY button, and then OK.
- If you would like, you can click on VIEW BY LARGE ICONS and change it back to VIEW BY CATEGORY.
- Close the Control Panel window.
- Copy the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file from your “Downloads” folder and paste it to your desktop screen. If you do not have
- Open the web browser that you used to download the MX490 series MP Drivers.
- View your downloads.
- You can press the CTRL and the letter “J” button on your keyboard at the same time.
- If you do not see the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file, skip to step 11.
- Open the download folder containing the setup file.
- If you are using Internet Explorer, right click on the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file and select OPEN CONTAINING FOLDER.
- If you are using the Google Chrome browser, click on the SHOW IN FOLDER option under the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file.
- If you are using Mozilla Firefox, right click on the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file and select OPEN CONTAINING FOLDER.
- When the Downloads folder opens, right-click on the “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe” file and select COPY.
- Close the browser and any other open windows.
- Right-click anywhere in the middle of your desktop screen and select PASTE.
- Make sure the file shows up on your desktop screen.
- Skip step 11 and go to step 12.
- Download the MP Drivers setup file from the official Canon website.
- In another tab, visit the following website:

- Below “Optional Drivers,” click on the SELECT button for the “MX490 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.02” that is 32.30 MB.
- Click on the red DOWNLOAD button.
- When you get the option to save, you need to save the file directly to your Desktop.
- If you are unable to save the file directly to your desktop, just save it and then repeat step 10 so you can copy and paste the downloaded file from your Downloads folder to your Desktop. The name of the file is “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe.”
- Change the file extension of the downloaded file to “.zip”.
- At the desktop, right-click on the downloaded file. The name of the file is “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe.”
- In the small menu that opens, click on RENAME.
- Leave the name of the folder the same, but change the file extension (last three letters after the dot) from .exe to .zip (it should now be “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.zip”).
- After changing the extension to mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.zip, press the ENTER or RETURN button on your keyboard.
- Click YES to rename the folder.
- Open the ZIP folder to run the CNMNPU.EXE file.
- Double-click on the downloaded folder “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.zip” and then double-click on the mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3 file.
- Double-click on the LAN folder.
- If you do not see the LAN folder, double-click on the WIN folder.
- If you do not see the WIN folder, double-click on the DRIVER folder.
- Double-click on the LAN folder.
- Double click on the “CNMNPU.EXE” file.
- When the program finishes running, you may be prompted to restart your computer. If you are not, go ahead and restart it anyway.
- After the computer has restarted, disable any anti-virus program that is running on your computer. If you have a Firewall installed, turn it off.
- Enable the network version of the scanner.
- Right-click on the START button.
- Click on DEVICE MANAGER.
- In device manager, look under imaging devices.
- If the network version of the printer is listed, right click on it and select enable (see picture below)
- If the network version of the printer is not listed, ignore this step and move on.
- Remove any TWAIN conflicts.
- Go to the desktop screen.
- Click on the “File Explorer” icon at the bottom of the computer screen (looks like a yellow file folder).
- On the left pane, click on THIS PC.
- Double-click on the main hard disk drive; it should be the “C:” drive.
- When the folder opens, double-click on the WINDOWS folder.
- Double-click on the “twain_32” folder.
- The only item that should be in this folder is a “wiatwain.ds” file.
- If you have any other items, right-click on them (one at a time) and select CUT.
- Then, minimize the window, right-click anywhere in the middle of the desktop screen and select “Paste.”
- Once any extra items (other than the “wiatwain.ds” file) have been removed from this folder, go to the next step.
- Make sure that any other network or wireless printers are turned off.
- Reinstall the MP Drivers for your printer. To do this, you can go back to the downloads folder and double-click on the original mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe that you downloaded earlier (not the zip file). If you are unable to get back to the downloads folder, you can do the following:
- In another tab, visit the following website:

- If you get the option to SAVE or RUN, select SAVE.
- Once the file is saved, you will get the option to RUN or OPEN. Select RUN. If you do not get the option to run, go to your Downloads folder and double click on the file. The name should be “mp68-win-mx490-1_02-ea33_3.exe.”
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install a driver and set up a connection (network or USB) to your computer.
When you are done, you can delete .Zip file that is on your desktop. You can also hide the extensions and hidden folders. To do that, please repeat step 9(1) through 9(6). Then, remove the dot next to “Show hidden files and folders” and place a checkmark in the box for “Hide extensions for known file types.” After that, you can click APPLY and then OK.
