MG8120 How to scan with ink out

I used to be able to scan without ink, but now I only get an error message to replace ink tank (U163).  How can I work around this? Thank you.

Problem solved.  I had forgotten that by holding down the Stop button for five seconds, the function that reads ink levels is disabled, and scanning capability is restored.
