MG6220 will no longer scan to my iMac

Using the Canon multifunction printer as scanner has always been awkward on Mac, but now it just won't work at all. 

MP Navigator EX quits every time it opens.

Canon IJ Scan Utility2.app says:

  Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons: 

    - Scanner is turned off. 

    - USB cable is disconnected.

    Code: 15, 156, 0

My MG6220 is turned on, and connected to the iMac directly, without a USB hub. The printer prints fine. 

I have an iMac running OS 10.13.6.
