I have a MX922 - trying to do a direct connect to my computer.No success

Printer is plugged in.
Laptop is plugged in.
Printer is connected to laptop.
Printer is set as Default on laptop.
Printer shows as Offline on laptop.
??

Hard connection.
Laptop directly to printer.
Printer is reading - PRINTER IS OFFLINE.

Still trying to connect.... keeping getting an Admin reader - saying I need USER NAME & PASSWORD.
It's hardline connected. I rebooted yesterday.
Laptop shows the printer. Shows it as the default. Show that it's IDLE.
Then you go to print and it says "OffLine" -- see if printer is connected.
Please help.
