Why are my color cartridges being used up even though I only print in black.  This has started recently.

Hi!

To ensure the most accurate information is provided, we will need to know the printer model you are using.

If this is a time-sensitive matter, our US-based technical support team is standing by, ready to help 24/7 via Email at http://bit.ly/EmailCanon or by phone at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666) weekdays between 10 AM and 10 PM ET (7 AM to 7 PM PT).

Thanks and have a great day!

I am using the MG5422 printer which is now about 18 months old.  It has just started showing that color ink is low.  By that I mean that it seems to be using the color ink even while I only print in black.  Originally this did not happen.

Hi abbymac,

There are several reasons why the color inks could be consumed, even when printing only in black:

1. Duplex printing is selected. If you print double-sided pages, a combination of the color inks will be used to produce the black on the page.

2. A paper type other than PLAIN PAPER is selected. Any other paper type selected other than plain paper will utilize the color inks to produce the black and other text and images on the page.

3. Our printers have a print head cleaning function that is performed automatically. Each time you turn off and then back on the printer, the print head nozzles will be cleaned during printer initialization to ensure the inkjet nozzles are dispensing the ink correctly. If the printer goes into a power save mode, when it comes out of that mode, it will also use a small amount of the color inks to clean the inkjet nozzles to ensure optimum print quality.

4. Some web pages and PDF files will use color inks to produce the text on the printout, even if the grayscale option is selected. In these cases, we cannot force the printer to print using only the black ink in the unit.

Hope this helps!
