Canon MX870 fine for years, now printing text w/ ghost lines

Help! I've been using my MX870 printer for a few years now with no problems, but just within one day it started showing ghost images/lines above all text, as shown below.  I've tried doing ALL the built in maintenance cleaning functions, as well as a manual print head alignment and prior to that, removing the print head for a total cleaning in warm water until all ran clear.  I also cleaned the internal clear horizontal timing strip. I'm wondering if I need a new print head?

Windows 7 Pro, 64Bit, 8GB RAM

Canon MX870 w 12.08 driver

Since I had zero replies here and needed to take action, I sprung for a new print head.  Unfortunately it helped only marginally, and even after further cleaning of everything possible (without disassembling the printer), I still have the same problem.  Unless someone has any last minute suggestions, I guess I'll be forced to buy another printer.

Do any of you moderators have any suggestions short of professional repair?
