Updated software needed for EOS Rebel T3 kit

Canon EOS Rebel T3 EF-S 18-55 IS II Kit

Hello - I am helping a friend go through items that were her mother's. I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3 - never used, still wrapped in box. It has the CDs for installing the software but they are for Windows 7. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the camera and/or load the software using the USB cable and getting current version from the Canon site? Thank you!

(You don't need any software to use the camera, just use a cardreader to download photo's.)
