If you are just trying to get the images, no drivers are necessary:
1. Make sure any wireless functions in the camera are off.
2. Try to run imageCapture directly
3. Try a new USB cable.
4. Get (or use the one in your computer) a card reader.

No, Apple has a built in ImageCapture app - It is what works behind the scenes to import images into Photos (and iPhoto before it). It has been in MacOs since forever.
I am pretty sure it is in the Applications folder, if not it is in Utilities.
