I've been using Canon digital cameras for probably over 20 years and this is the first time I've had this happen in an album. The thumbnail image, 035 in this example, is replaced by an icon,

The actual image is still there when I hover the cursor over it. If I rename the image, then rename it back to 035, it looks fine for a while, but the icon returns later.

Any idea what the cause is and how to stop it?

Hi, atikovi!
So that the Community can help you better, we need to know which Canon camera you're currently using, which operating system is running on your computer (i.e. Windows or macOS, and which version thereof), and which application you're seeing this thumbnail issue in. That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

Thanks and have a great day!
