EOS R5 and EOS Utility 3 problems: Files hard to find or disappear, app shuts down, etc.

I previously used a 5d Mark III and eos utility 2 on my Dell.  I got a new r5 recntly and tried to download photos using eos utility 2.   It didn't work so I went on the canon website and downloaded the eos utility 3.

I have had nothing but problems with erratic behaviour.

I have been downloading my photos into new file folders by date and trying to import them to my computer...It is lodging the files in weird places.  Sometimes placing the files in the last folders imported instead of a separate folder under pictures.

Sometimes, I go through the procedure and the file disappears altogether.

Sometimes when I scroll down the picture list to get to the box to enter the new file  name...it shuts down the program software and I have to turn the camera off and reboot it again and redo.

Other bizarre things that I can't explain!  I have never had any trouble with the eos 2 and my Zoom Browser.

I read in the Canon user's manual, after the fact, that you shouldn't try to download photos until the proper eos utility is installed.  This is what I did.

Anyone have similar problems?

What should I do?

Uninstall the eos 3 and try to download again?

Do I have to uninstall the eos 2 first.

Can I use the eos 3 for my 5d Mark III as well? ...my backup camera?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.  

Sorry to hear about your issues.  A little more background information would be helpful.  Which Windows OS are you running?  Is your Windows OS up-to-date?  Did you reboot the computer after you installed the EOS Utility 3?

Make sure you are using the correct memory cards.  Be sure to format them in the camera prior to first use.  I like to use the EOS Utility, too.  It does an excellent job of sorting and renaming files on the fly as you download.  Always check the destination folder definition before you start a download.  Both versions of the EOS Utility use the last destination folder you defined for new downloads.

A card reader is always an option.  I recommend using one until you can get the EOS Utility to function properly.  First use the card reader, then try the EOS Utility.  Copy the files off the memory card before you try ot use the EOS Utility 3.

BTW, the choice of using EOS Utility 2 or 3 is foxed.  There is a Windows Service, the EOS Utility Launcher, that detects when a Canon camera has been connected to a USB port and turned on.  It will determine the camera model, and then launch the appropriate version of the EOS Utility.
