Hi frosch1,

I'm sorry to hear your EOS R5 Mark II and the EOS Utility aren't connecting. There are somethings to check with an issue like this. The first thing is to to double check you have the newest version of the EOS Utility. If you currently have an older version installed it can sometimes cause issues like this. The current version is available HERE. Once you are on the web page click on the Software & Drivers button and the current version is EOS Utility 3.19.0.

Another thing to double check is that if your computer has a pending operating system update try allowing that to go through and then use the restart option in the operating system. Sometimes if an operating system has pending updates it can block the connection.

If the issue continues we would need a little bit more information for further trouble shooting. How are you connecting the camera and computer? Are you seeing any errors on the camera LCD, and if you are what does it say word for word? If you have a second computer does the same thing happen if you try connecting the camera and the EOS Utility on it?

Thank you, I was out of town. I have only one computer, a desktop about 1 year old. The EOS utility was uninstalled and reinstalled to get the latest version when I had this problem with no benefit. Oddly, I tried plugging the usb into a different port, and it changed how the connection appears. Now it takes up entire screen with my albums listed in a vertical row on the left (I use the legacy application for photos on Windows) I can then choose album into which I load the photos. I create an album ahead of connection. But when I connect, a small box still appears initially which gives the message that the camera is not recognized, but the utility works fine. As long as it works, I'm good. However, I would assume that my having registered the camera with Canon as soon as I got it home would allow the EOS utility to recognize it, since I've been registered with Canon for a while (EOS Rebel, 40d, 7d, 5d mk4, after AE1 and A1 in the past). Do I need to do something else for the utility to recognize the camera?

A reboot after a fresh install might be needed. Are you using an off-the-shelf laptop or desktop?

Already rebooted, it's a custom built desktop, Micro Center built it for me, knowing primary use was to be processing large photos and sharing them (other than usual email, Google searches, etc). I'm 80, but not quite a luddite (yet).

You may need to ask Micro Center, too.

A “not recognized” message would suggest a missing device driver, or even an issue with the USB port.  Are you running an Intel or AMD chipset.

USB port expanders don’t seem to work well with Canon bodies, especially passive ones. Try all ports, especially the ports that come directly from the motherboard.

You might also try installing Canon’s DPP4 app.  Again, check with Microsoft Center because an off the shelf product from Dell, HP, etc would work just fine.

Running Intel core 12th generation. I can try several more ports at back of the tower (under desk, not so easy for 80 year old). The EOS utility is working fine, but with the weird message still showing up. If message doesn't go away with other ports, then. NBD! BTW, enjoying photography since 1959 (with Argus C44 35 mm for first 12 years, film speed 8, the up to faster film speed 25 , then blazing 64!!!!
