Digital Photo Professional - New release 4.21.30

When you use the link it should recognize your OS and supply the correct download. There isn't much in the way of release notes but they can be found here: Digital Photo Professional 4.21.30 for Windows 

I have loaded it and taken it for a spin. Noting much to note although it does appear to load images faster. I always had an issue where the photo would load and then a delay to focus, that time has been reduced..

Somehow Canon needs to make sure that this link appears on Google search when looking for DPP & NN!  It does not come up at the moment.

@JamesHarvey I know that Canon is doing some web development and it may not be optimized for crawling currently, it is a fairly recent build. It came to my attention when I was talking randomly to the support team.

But I do agree, it is a great directory of Canon software and they should have it as a link for all of their bodies on the Canon USA site.

Persuading Google to index something is difficult in my experience. The attached image is what Google reports to me about indexing of one of my domains. I have a sitemap and have attempted to meet all of the Google requirements.

Getting them to Index pages is the first battle, once you get that accomplish you cross your fingers they will use the information to crawl the site. 

I have the same struggles John.

Mark, thanks, got it all installed.  Just got a little AsusFlow for use when traveling, small but fast enough to support NN/DPP, LR/PS, & DaVinci Studio.  BR/JH

I have an aversion to the PHP programming language. I could never predict all of the things that a program written in PHP would do. This seems to me to make it difficult to secure.

But PHP seems to have improved over the past few decades. I might use it on a machine that someone else is responsible for securing.

I looked at some of the source code at https://github.com/Piwigo/Piwigo 

I use only static pages for photos, but wrote some CGI programs in C. I wrote Korn shell scripts to create the static pages. I use the file system as the data store without a database.I have changed the Korn shell scripts over the years so that the earlier pages do not look like the later ones.

I suppose this is way off the topic the thread has wound around to but I always d/l the latest version of DPP4 and give it a "spin". I have done so ever since I got into Canon and/or DPP4 first come on the scene can't remember which was first. However, I was born in Photoshop. At the time I was in the Graphics Arts Division (40 years) at Hallmark. And, at the time, Hallmark was always on the leading edge of technology. Photoshop was in its infancy when Hallmark got some of the first editions.  Really only contrast and exposure was possible.The PS folks even visited the Hallmark facilities to learn and observe. Also, at that time, Hallmark had the second largest creative department in the world second only to Walt Disney.  I guess it is easy to see why I always resort back to PS.

DPP4 is a good photo editing app and for free it is fantastic. I have always found it to be 'clunky'. Just a tad difficult to navigate. The final edits are fine and this may just be a personal preference.

The lack of a full on layers system is a huge limitation to real photo editing, IMHO. For me, now retired, DPP4 is probably all I need so I suspect I will still open it and experiment and play with it but PS is still on my computer. In fact I encourage all Canon users to get DPP4 just as general principal. It is probably the best and biggest thing anybody can do to make, if they want, the best from their Canon cameras. It's free, you can't beat free.

Tid bit:

Hallmark is no longer anything close to what it was when I worked there just a shell really of its former self. A couple claims to fame, Hallmark was the only creative company that Walt Disney and Charles Schultz gave permission to draw their characters. Schultz was extremely protective. National Geographic was there several times. Plus numerous well known photographers and artists, names you will likely know. It was a wonderful place to work.

I remember Hallmark in Kansas City. My computer graphics background was very different than creative. I wrote device drivers for graphics cards and subscribed to IEEE Computer Graphics and ACM Siggraph. I wrote code to capture data from sensors and wrote code to display captured data.

It has been decades since I used any Adobe software.

For raw development I use DPP or Rawtherapee. If doing more than cropping, white balance, gamma correction, and unsharp mask, then I save 16 bit TIFF files and use Gimp or Hugin free software.

Gimp does layers well and Hugin does stacking and panoramas well.

What I like about DPP is the "digital lens optimizer" and the DPRAW tool. I do not know of other programs that do those things as well.

NN works really well locally on a decent GPU (yes, Canon a app that uses the GPU!) and I find its combination of NR, lens correction, sharpening & demoire (if output to DPP) quite compelling as it uses Canon camera & lens specific profiles.  I prefer it to Lightroom's AI denoise due the integration.  You can output as a CR3 to LR & that works really well to utilize LR's "consumer" fetures like demist.  /JH
