Digital Photo Pro - How to Select Folder

PeteMc
Apprentice

I just installed Digital Photo Professional 4 (v4.21.10.0) and it does not apper to let me choose any other folder than either Pictures or something from the Desktop (Win11).  I'm also not able to type in the Specified Folder field, onliy click on the Browse button that is also just the Desktop.

I haven't spent the time yet to uninstall an reinstall.  And maybe move the Installer into the folder I want to use and see if that makes a difference.  But I figured I'd check here before I spent much time on it.

Also...  Anyone have a "best" email address or link to send in a BUG Report to Canon. From what I've seen about DPP, it is not the best program.  But not reporting issues, even ones they know about, does not do any good in gettng problems resolved.

Consider spending some time with the software, reviewing the MANUAL, and contacting support before submitting a bug report to the software developers. You might be putting the cart before the horse.

Actually, the problem is (semi) solved.  After opening DPP again, probably the 4th time, a number of other icons appeared and low an behold there was a My Computer.  Which is what I what I was expecting the first time.

I think I'm still going to uninstall and clean out all the DPP folders and Reg entry and it probably is a corrupt installation.    As for the manual... did that and it was of no help for the issue (their HTML design did nothing but make it take 3 times as long too).  But as an FYI, on groups like this, that's not a helpful comment. If you have the answer great.  If not, well....

Greetings,

The folder hierarchy (view) missing from the navigation pane in DPP is something specific to your software environment.  I doubt there is something corrupt or in the registry that's a problem.  We often see these types of issues when software such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Box or other types of cloud storage are in use.  May or may not apply in your situation.

The DPP installer can be run from any folder or directory.  It should be installed under a user with administrative privileges.

Welcome to the forum!  I believe you have come to the right place.

I highly recommend the 4 tutorial videos that Canon offers at https://www.usa.canon.com/learning/training-articles/training-articles-list/digital-photo-profession...   It is ideal if you have two monitors and can stop the videos and explore DPP (especially if you are  like me and a kinesthetic learner).  You can also play the videos on your phone while you peruse the software.  I use DPP all the time and think it is a fantastic bit of free software.

To your original point, I am pretty sure that the default is for DPP to remember the last folder you were in and return to it.  So if  you want for it to start at a different place, navigate there, close the software and restart it.  That's much simpler than reinstalling into a different location.

It sounds like your navigation pane is simply closed. I have not yet used DPP in Win11.

On Win10, the folder pane appeared on the left edge.  You could toggle it open and closed by clicking on a tiny triangular icon on the left border. The icon appears in the center of it.

I don’t have access to my computer today.  Perhaps someone could post a screenshot of it.  This GUI feature is built into Windows and appears in many apps.

Interesting...  Canon requires you to allow Advertising Cookies to view their videos.  But obviouisly available on other sites.

I can do that!  Here is the carat opened

Below is that carat closed.  Clicking it toggles the folder view pane open and closed.

This is in Windows 11, btw.

That cookie requirement may be something newish and is not universally well-received.  I don't work for Canon and don't know if it is truly Canon or perhaps a third party handling some of their video and/or web services that has made a decision to enforce that as a requirement.  The DPP tutorials are also on YouTube.
