I've been thinking about getting s batter grip for my Eos R camera, but I really don't want to dish 250 for a new one, should I get a third party one, or just cough up the money for the official one? I've heard that some third party grips and fail and break away from the camera if you're using a heavy lens, so that's why in skeptical.

There have been instances of the third party grips failing or stopping the cameras from working as expected. The Canon grip is assured of compatibility with the camera. Make sure you check the firmware version in the grip and if needed update the grip to the latest firmware, 1.1.0 that came out in 2020.
I don't like the cost implication of a third party grip breaking and the camera + heavy lens ending up on the floor 😱
