Along with the R600 Camcorder I purchases an inexpensive small external directional mic (for about $55); didn't want to spend more on such an inexpensive camera and didn't want anything much larger on such a small camera. In some initial tests I've done, I noticed little if any difference in background noise or sound quality and perhaps better sound from the internal mic. (I didn't test for zoom noise, which I now will be worse on the internal mic.) Am I imagining this or am I expecting too much from such a cheap setup? Thanks.

What microphone did you purchase? Is it unidirectional, omnidirectional, or bidirectional?
