Just wanted to confirm if generic batteries charge in the camera or do I have to buy a seperate charger for it

As long as they use the Inteligence System, the answer is yes. I got mine from vhbw-tec on Ebay.

What model number did you get?

I have used Watson batteries and they work well. They will charge on the camcorder.
Watson BP-808
Watson BP-819
Watson BP-827
Wasabi is another brand I use and trust.

These batteries seem to be for Canon HF S20. Do they fit in the Canon HF G40?

Those work for the HF-G20. The Watson ones for the G40 are the BP-820 and BP-828.
