Canon Vixia HF R800 - adhesive cold shoe modification

The Vixia HF R800 is a great entry level camcorder.

One limitation, however, is that it doesn't have any cold/accessory shoes.

I thought I'd share a few photos showing what two very simple modifications can help achieve:

  • 1) An adhesive cold shoe. About $10 from Amazon, eBay, etc.
  • 2) A 1 to 3 cold shoe adapter just to give yourself more expansion options.

Photos below of rigging up some different microphone and lighting combinations.

Or mount the camcorder on an L or C bracket, Cam Caddie or cage rig that has shoe mounts. There are many options out there. Far more stable than stacking multiple accessories on the camcorder itself via an adhesive cold shoe adapter. Rather dodgy in my opinion.

Glad it works for you though.

Yes. I use the L bracket and scorpion mount too.

The benefit of having this rigged onto the camera (as I saw it) was more for run and gun setups. Or least more compact setups that could fit alongside the camera in something like a satchel bag.

I have no intention of removing the adhesive shoe, so added some super glue around it to really attach it to the camera body. The accessories are lightweight and the setup feels pretty strong to me.
