The full manual says that a new SD card needs to be formatted before use.
Yet, i just tested a new SanDisk extreme pro card sdxc uhs-I on my new camcorder and the image was there when i moved it to my pc. It looks like it was already formatted or the camcorder formatted it automatically. Please explain.

Greetings,
Sandisk cards come pre formatted. Typically either FAT32 or exFAT.
Please note, this does not mean the card will be 100% compatible with your camera or its file system.
You are risking potential data loss. Canon cameras do not automatically format cards for you. All cards (regardless of brand ) should be formatted in camera before use.
